Attention to detail
Copings are wrapped or grooved for a seamless edge into the pool. Pool anchors are raised so the pool can still be covered. Borders and designs are marked out for crisp lines.
What poured rubber is
Safescapes makes three branded systems. SafeFlex™ is for homes: pool decks, patios, entranceways and steps. SafePave™ is for driveways and garages. SafeTop™ is safety surfacing for playgrounds, daycares, schools and municipal parks. They all start as rubber granules bound with resin, troweled by hand over a prepared base, and they cure into a porous, slip-resistant surface. Thick base layers and leveling sections use SBR rubber from recycled tires.
Because it's porous, water drains through and follows the slope underneath instead of sitting on top. Safescapes says that's part of why the surface stays non-slip when wet. Because it's bound with resin throughout, it can expand and contract with freeze-thaw cycles instead of cracking or lifting.
Why people choose it
Covers what's already there
Concrete is the most common base, but Safescapes also installs over stone, asphalt, interlock, wooden decks, and even gravel and other aggregate bases. A tired surface gets a new face without being torn out.
Grip when wet
Non-slip when wet, which is why pool surrounds are a signature use.
Easy to look after
Power-wash it (Safescapes says up to 3200 psi, held a couple of inches from the surface). Dish soap, hot water and a scrub brush take care of tough stains.
Long life
Safescapes puts the lifespan of a rubber surface at about 20 years and recommends resealing every 3–5 years, depending on traffic and UV exposure.
How a typical job goes
Matt describes Safescapes' typical home jobs as 1–2 day installs. The work starts with prep. The existing surface gets checked, problem areas are built up and leveled, and borders and designs are marked out so the lines come out crisp. Around pools, copings are wrapped or grooved and anchors are raised. Then the rubber is mixed and hand-troweled in one continuous pour, which gives a seamless surface with fewer exposed edges. Expect to wait about 48 hours before walking on it, and longer before parking a car or putting heavy planters or furniture on it.
After that, upkeep is simple. Power-wash it now and then, and reseal it every few years depending on traffic and sun. If something gouges it, the area is cut out and patched with leftover rubber from the original job so the colour matches.
